Identify the action you actually need
An ordinary restart turns a responsive device off and on. A force restart addresses a different situation, while a reset or erase can change settings or remove data. A guide that moves casually between these terms can create unnecessary risk.
Describe the original symptom before choosing an action. A single app, a carrier activation and an unresponsive whole device are different scopes. Do not assume restarting will resolve all of them or that failure to resolve one establishes a hardware defect.
Preserve the useful information
If the device is responsive, save work and record the exact message, affected app and software version. Keep a working account recovery method available. This information can help support without requiring a destructive change.
Duo’s side-button Touch ID is not a Home button. The general Apple article is linked for context, with the explicit limitation that we have not confirmed a model-specific sequence from it.
Use current model-specific support
Follow an official instruction that clearly applies to the device in front of you. Do not try repeated combinations copied from unrelated layouts. If a prompt mentions erasing content or changing account access, stop; that is outside a routine power cycle.
- Confirm the device model and current software.
- Distinguish a responsive screen from an unresponsive device.
- Keep restart separate from reset, recovery and erase.
What this page will not claim
We have not tested a retail Duo, and we do not promise that restarting fixes an unconfirmed issue. A button instruction will be added only when its applicability can be established.
This gap is about our evidence, not proof that the device cannot restart. If a real device needs assistance now, contact Apple with the precise model and symptom rather than escalating to destructive recovery without a diagnosis.
