Phone Camera Help
Work through safe Pixel camera checks for focus, image quality, crashes and third-party app conflicts without guessing at hardware damage.
The shortest useful answer.
Clean the lens with a soft dry cloth, remove anything covering the camera, restart the Camera app and phone, update the app and system, and compare the built-in Camera app with third-party apps.
Try these checks first
- Wipe each lens gently with a clean, soft, dry cloth.
- Remove a case, protector or magnetic accessory that overlaps the camera area.
- Close and reopen the built-in Camera app.
- Restart the phone.
- Update the Camera app and phone software.
- Compare the built-in Camera app with the app where the problem first appeared.
If only one third-party app fails, review that app’s camera permission and update it before changing phone-wide settings.
Settings → Apps → [app] → Permissions → CameraIf focus or image quality is poor
Clean the lens before using software fixes. Tap the subject on screen, use ordinary lighting and avoid placing the subject closer than the lens can focus.
Compare all available rear and front cameras. A problem limited to one lens, one lighting condition or one app is more useful evidence than “the camera is broken.”
If the Camera app closes or freezes
Restart the app and phone, then check for updates. Make sure storage is not completely full.
Safe mode can help identify whether a downloaded app is interfering. If the Camera app works in Safe mode, remove recently installed apps one at a time after returning to normal mode. Safe mode does not identify the responsible app automatically.
About camera movement or rattle
Google notes that some Pixel camera hardware can make a slight rattle when the phone is shaken. A sound by itself is not enough to diagnose damage. Compare it with actual focus, stabilization and image behavior, and check official guidance for the exact model.
What not to do
- Do not press hard on a lens or insert liquid around the camera module.
- Do not install an unknown camera “repair” app.
- Do not clear unrelated phone data or factory-reset before app, permission, update and Safe mode checks.
- Do not claim hardware failure from one blurry image.
When to use official support
Escalate when the built-in Camera app fails after current updates and a restart, one camera remains unavailable across apps, there is visible physical or liquid damage, or image problems persist in Safe mode.
Questions about this guide.
Q01Does a camera rattle always mean it is broken?
No. Google notes that movement in the camera can cause a slight rattle on some Pixel models. Judge it together with actual camera behavior and official model guidance.
Q02What can Safe mode tell me?
If the camera works in Safe mode, a downloaded app may be interfering. Safe mode is a diagnostic step, not proof of which app is responsible.
