Phone Battery Help

Try these checks first

1. Note when the change began: new-phone setup, a software update, a new app or a change in signal conditions.
2. Charge normally, then compare use across at least one representative day instead of a few minutes of heavy setup.
3. Open battery usage and identify the apps or system features that used the largest share.
4. Update an app that is using unusually high battery, then restart the phone.
5. Keep Battery Optimization and Adaptive Battery enabled unless a specific app has a documented reason to be exempt.

Percentages show each item’s share of the battery used; they do not diagnose battery hardware by themselves.

Allow for setup and update work

A new phone can use more power while it restores apps, indexes files, syncs accounts and learns use patterns. Google states that battery optimization after a new setup or reset can take weeks.

Battery use can also rise for a few days after a software update while the phone downloads and optimizes software. Keep the device updated and compare the pattern after that work settles.

This does not mean every fast drop is normal. A phone that becomes dangerously hot, swells, smells unusual or shuts down repeatedly needs a safety response rather than a longer observation period.

Check the apps using power

Look for a clear outlier before changing many settings at once:

• an app running for much longer than you used it;
• constant background activity from a recently installed app;
• navigation, camera, video, hotspot or gaming use that matches the drain;
• poor mobile signal that makes the phone work harder;
• a restore, upload or backup that is still running.

Update the outlier, restrict it only if the app can still perform its essential job, or uninstall it temporarily when the timing clearly matches the battery change.

Keep optimization working

Adaptive Battery and battery optimization are enabled by default on supported Pixel phones. They limit work from apps you use less often.

Do not disable optimization for every app as a blanket fix. Exemptions can allow more background work and shorten battery life.

When the drain needs more investigation

Escalate beyond routine optimization when:

• the phone loses a large amount of charge while unused after setup/update activity has settled;
• one app repeatedly dominates usage after updating or reinstalling it;
• the phone shuts down with charge remaining;
• charging and battery behavior changed after liquid or physical damage;
• battery swelling, smoke, an unusual smell or dangerous heat appears.

For swelling, smoke or fire risk, stop using and charging the device and contact the manufacturer or qualified repair/emergency resource. Do not press on a swollen enclosure or continue battery tests.

What not to do

• Do not diagnose battery health from one percentage drop or one screenshot.
• Do not install an unknown “battery repair” or “calibration” app.
• Do not factory-reset before checking usage, updates, restore activity and app behavior.
• Do not keep charging a swollen, smoking or physically damaged phone.
