Cool the phone safely

1. Stop camera, game, navigation, hotspot, video or transfer activity.
2. Disconnect the charging cable.
3. Move the phone out of direct sun, a hot vehicle or an enclosed bag.
4. Remove the case if you can do so safely.
5. Let the phone cool naturally in a ventilated place before using or charging it again.

Do not put a hot phone in a refrigerator or freezer. Rapid cooling can create condensation and does not address the cause.

When warmth can follow heavy work

Google lists setup, restoring data, charging, video, hotspot use and large transfers among activities that can make a Pixel feel warm. High ambient temperature and poor mobile signal can add more work.

The phone may protect itself by reducing CPU performance, slowing or stopping charging, limiting camera use, or changing mobile data and Wi-Fi behavior. A temperature message or automatic shutdown should be allowed to complete; do not repeatedly override it.

“Can happen” is not the same as “always safe.” Repeated extreme heat, danger signs or heat during light use needs further investigation.

Find the activity behind repeated heat

After the phone has cooled:

• check battery usage for an app running unusually long;
• finish pending setup, restore or system updates on stable Wi-Fi;
• test without a recently installed high-activity app;
• reduce hotspot, video, navigation or gaming load;
• compare charging with a compatible known-good charger at room temperature.

Change one condition at a time so the result is interpretable.

What not to do

• Do not cool the phone with ice, a refrigerator or direct liquid.
• Do not continue fast charging during an overheating warning.
• Do not diagnose internal battery damage from warmth alone.
• Do not open, puncture or press on a swollen phone.
• Do not continue DIY troubleshooting when smoke, fire or dangerous heat is present.

When to contact official support or repair

Use official support when temperature warnings recur during light use, the phone shuts down repeatedly, charging stops in a comfortable environment, heat began after impact or liquid exposure, or the enclosure changes shape.

For smoke, fire or immediate physical danger, prioritize personal safety and the emergency guidance appropriate to your location over saving phone data.
