Choose the correct transfer path

  • Check whether both phones use the same operating system or you are crossing between iPhone and Android; WhatsApp's supported methods differ.
  • Confirm the phone number you will register on the new phone and that the old phone can still open WhatsApp.
  • Check WhatsApp's current backup or chat-transfer instructions for that exact pair of devices before installing or registering on the new one.

Move chats and verify

  • Use WhatsApp's own chat-transfer or supported restore process; an ordinary phone copy is not proof that chat history moved.
  • Follow the on-screen QR or backup instructions without interrupting either phone.
  • On the new phone, open several recent and older chats and confirm important media before retiring the old phone.

Protect the old copy

  • Do not erase the old device or delete its WhatsApp data merely because the app appears on the new phone.
  • If the transfer fails, use WhatsApp's official recovery instructions for the two platforms rather than repeatedly resetting the device.
  • Carrier-line activation and WhatsApp chat transfer are separate checks; verify both before selling or wiping the old phone.
